//good antivirus is totally mandatory...
Hackers have become very vicious + are running ahead of the companies that make malware protection ... there is NO such thing as protection that will be 100% effective ! Please be careful when you are on the internet + when you download anything ; save it so you can scan it with your a/v (anti-virus) app before you run it ... also save + scan email attachments + photos + videos you get from everyone to the hard-drive, then scan them, THEN open them !!! There should be no exceptions to this rule : scan everything before you open it and/or run it ! scan your breakfast, lunch & dinner too !

These are my top 3-picks based on the incredible testing + research done by the exceedingly reputable + independent a/v apps laboratory av-test.org ; the parameters are effectiveness of protection / prevention / cleaning along with impact on system resources as well as ease of use / user-friendliness. These apps are free + do not require any kind of ''major-geek-degree'' to install + run them ; however, you must make sure you do not have another antivirus application installed ; that antivirus app must be properly uninstalled before installing another ! Google how to remove your present a/v app if you are in doubt or not quite sure.
As with any app you are trying in Windows , it is always wise to set a system restore point just in case things go 'ooops'. Do not know how to use system restore ? Not a problem - just go here ... CLICK

//a secure browser is absolutely necessary...
Sadly the bad-guys are really into jacking-up as many computers as possible + it has become like going through a minefield when you go onto the internet , which means protecting your pc as best as possible. Be wise where you go on the 'net as well as what you download + what you allow to happen when suspicious elements pop up.
If you get an uneasy feeling about a website or an application, stop what you are doing + run a virus scan or ask an experienced user for help ... as stated before, please scan everything !
We recommend Firefox or Google Chrome or Opera ... Also happy to report the new EDGE browser in Windows 10 is soooo much better than Internet Explorer which is now being deprecated by Microsoft - do NOT use Internet Explorer !!!
Note : As of December 2018 Microsoft has announced they will be abandoning the Edge browser and building a new one based on Google's Chrome browser !!!

//a properly patched system is a must...
Since hackers never stop their nasty deeds , patches (updates) are constantly being put out by reputable makers of the hardware + software ... browsers, anti-malware protection + system updates must be done to keep the bad stuff from invading your internet device. Anything connected to the internet that is not kept patched / updated has an exceedingly great chance of becoming infected with viruses + malware.

//do you really need these ?!?
There are a few softwares that have become notorious for the ''security holes'' that exist which the black hats / hackers take advantage of ... the bottom line is if you do not need to use these apps , by all means uninstall them ! Making matters worse , the companys that provide these programs are at times quite lazy in the 'patching' of the applications ; the biggest offender is java , which is owned by oracle. Personally , i feel they should be legislated out of business , especially when you consider entire country governments have made public announcements requesting computer users not to use java , and if it is installed , to uninstall it -- yes , it is that bad ! Making the matter even worse is that oracle (the maker of java) remains in the constant state of denial like an ostrich sticking its' head into the sand.
Here is a list of apps that you probably can manage to do without : java , adobe pdf reader, adobe flash player, adobe air, adobe acrobat + adobe shockwave player. Admittedly , Adobe has become sort of good at patching the security holes in their programs , but if you can get along without any or all of these ''hacker targets'', please do avoid them ; if they are installed in your system , do consider removing them. In any event , remove java ... no matter what !

//the most secure operating sytem...
This is a subject that is always hotly debated at great length among IT + security professionals all over God's green earth. One thing we all agree on is the bad-guys (aka the ''black-hats'') currently have the upper hand.
While the ''white-hats'' (the good guys) are very much hard at work to keep the various operating systems as secure as possible , users are highly advised to exercise common sense when going about the internet , as well as learning the basic maintenance to keep your computer as secure as possible. Make it a point to learn how to keep your private information private ; there are many online articles on how to do this ... CLICK
A couple more security tips for your protection...
Personally i do not recommend online banking + if you get a suspicious email from a financial institution that wants personal info , delete it at once ... never enter your driver's license , social security # , or any other personal info over the internet unless you want to be a prime candidate for identity theft.
Do not open attachments in emails , no matter who they are from ; download them + scan them with your antivirus scanner , then open the attachment.
Another tip : rather than revealing your credit-card number to every company , consider using paypal , especially if you do any foreign transactions. Personally ,
i use paypal + have never had any problems with them. also, use the virtual keyboard built into your OS to type in sensitive info (if you must do such)
Again a reminder :
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A 100% SECURE OS (operating system) !
